MSMBA has established and operated the one single health institution in Hungary today that specifically serves the rehabilitation of MS patients: this institute is the Nyíregyháza SM Centre. With the support of the Nyíregyháza local government, the Foundation purchased an estate in the town for this purpose in 2002. Having overcome many hindrances of bureaucracy and financing, the Centre was opened in 2006: it provided for the treatment of 16 patients that year, and from 2007, it can accommodate 25 patients. The demand for treatment can be shown by the fact that patients living 40-50 kilometres from the institute are driven to the rehabilitation centre every day. Two-thirds of the patients are physically disabled at a medium or severe level.
For the patients, the institute is far more than just a health service provider: it is a second home, where they can find a real community. The devoted workers of the centre do not only consider the professional treatment of patients to be their jobs, they also try to organize as many excursions and local programs as possible to break the monotony of everyday routine, and to give the patients experiences that they otherwise could never have attained.
There is a demand for the establishment of similar institutes in every region. MSMBA intended to present the Nyíregyháza investment as a pilot project, with the hope that sooner or later, based on the positive example, further servicing SM centres would be established in other parts of the country as well.
Part of the basic care of the patients is financed by the Hungarian National Treasury, but the full costs of higher level services, including remedial gymnastics, curative massage and physiotherapy is covered by MSMBA, with major contribution from the patrons.
In addition to operating the institute, the Foundation also plays an active part in development projects: in 2008, it spent 3.5 million HUF on the installation of a modern stair lift, and, most recently, the Foundation added 1.4 million HUF to 4.5 million HUF of applied funding to be spent on the roof structure and for the preparation of further modernizing activities. The goal is to provide an own pool, and to change the type of institution to be able to function as a boarding institute with accommodation. However, a number of criteria have to be met, and MSMBA needs to get several ten millions of Forints. The Foundation hopes for applicable funds and that supporters, seeing the great progress, will hold on to the Foundation.
